FAQ

How do I save the ringtone or wallpaper?

If you haven't already, please see the tutorial. Depending on the phone, saving the ringtone or wallpaper can be tricky.

Motorola: Typically, you have to hit the top-middle button on your Moto phone and select "Goto". This will open up the WAP browser and load the URL in your text message. For Verizon Motorolas, you will usually have a "Save" or "Save Ringtone" menu item.

Nokia: On newer Nokias, you will have to select "Find URL" or "Find Web Address". This will locate the URL and allow you to click on it to open the WAP browser. On older Nokia's, you will have to edit the text message and remove everything but the URL and then click "Use Detail" for the URL.

Samsung: Most Samsungs have a "Cut Address" option, this should find the web URL and allow you to open it. On a few Samsungs, you will have to open the URL manually, meaning you have to type it into your WAP browser.

SonyEricsson: On most SonyEricssons, you can scroll in the text message to the link and then click "Connect".

LG: On Verizon LGs, you will have to hit "Save Sound" or "Save Pix".

Sanyo: On Sanyos, you usually scroll down through the text message. The URL will be highlighted automatically so you can then click it.

Alternatively, if you are unable to extract the URL, you can also type your unique user URL directly into your phone browser; this URL will always contain the last ringtone or wallpaper you sent to your phone. Here are some examples below

US / Canada: http://www.tonethis.com/PhoneNumber (ie http://www.tonethis.com/5102824220)

UK: http://uk.tonethis.com/CountryCodePhoneNumber (ie http://uk.tonethis.com/448131613191)

I don't see my phone or carrier?

ToneThis is constantly testing and adding support for new phones. ToneThis is also working with carriers locally and internationally to add more support. Please check / post in the forum to see the status of your phone or carrier. Please note, ToneThis cannot support Verizon non-camera phones and Verizon Samsung phones. Additionally, ToneThis does not support prepaid plans such as Virgin or Boost Mobile. ToneThis will also not support any phones that are not MP3 ringtone quality phones.

How do I type the URL into the phone?

First, make sure that your phone is internet enabled meaning you can access the web on your phone. Next, you will want to browse to either a web icon or a browser; sometimes the web is listed under services or fun and games. Once you've opened the browser, you will have to navigate the menus to find a "GoTo URL" option, here you will be able to type in the URL to your ringtone or wallpaper. If possible, bookmark the URL so the next time you can load the page up faster. The URL will always be http://www.tonethis.com/phonenumber and for international users http://CountryDomain.tonethis.com/CountryCodePhoneNumber - see above for examples.

ToneThis crashes when I launch it?

Most likely you are using Windows 95. ToneThis supports Windows 98, ME 2000, XP. If ToneThis is crashing under Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, then please try uninstalling and reinstalling the application. If your crash contains the following debug message "...DSOUND...", then it's likely you need to upgrade your version of DirectX - this can be done here. Note, Windows 98 users, please make sure you've installed the latest version of Windows Media Player, that can be found here. If you continue to have issues, please post to the forum.

I have more then 1 phone?

Within ToneThis, you can change the phone number by clicking on "Profile" and entering in a new phone number, handset and carrier. This will allow you to use one installation of ToneThis to deliver to multiple phones.

I didn't recieve the ringtone or wallpaper?

Depending on your coverage and the carrier, it may take a few minutes for the text message containing the link to the ringtone or wallpaper to arrive. On occasion, it may take longer; in these situations, we've noticed that sending and recieving of another text messages may trigger all of the text messages to be instantly delivered. Please also verify that you have entered in the correct phone number and selected the exact carrier in the ToneThis application. If you don't see your carrier, you cannot select an affiliated carrier, this will not work. Also note, if you were originally an ATT subscriber before the Cingular merger, you are still ATT subscriber, not Cingular. Please also check that you have selected a supported handset, note, Verizon non-camera phones and most Verizon Samsung phones are not supported. It is also possible that you are not subscribed to a text or picture messaging plan with your carrier and the text or picture messages ToneThis is attempting to deliver are bouncing. ToneThis will email you (if an email is on file) when ringtone or wallpaper text / picture messaging delivery is bouncing to your mobile number.

MAC support?

MAC support is on it's way!

I can't download my ringtone or wallpaper?

Depending on the carrier and your plan, you will need to have internet access (ie PCS Vision, mMode, MediaNet, TZones etc) on your phone to download the ringtones or wallpapers to your phone. ToneThis will send you a text message with a link to a internet page on your phone containing the ringtone or wallpaper. Most users have internet access so this shouldn't affect you, if it affects you please check with your carrier / plan. Note, on some phones, it may be tricky to click the link - on some phones, you click "Find", on others, you click "Goto", on some older Nokias, you will have to click "Use Detail" and edit everything out of the text message except for the URL.

I get an error when I try downloading the ringtone or wallpaper?

The "Invalid Content Type" error message is the most common error. This usually means the ringtone or wallpaper is too large or the ringtone or wallpaper format is not supported on that phone. Make sure your ringtones are not larger then a 15 to 20 second sound clip - Note, ToneThis does not officially support ringtones greater than 5-10 seconds on older Verizon handsets. Also, certain carrier gateways, do not allow delivery of ringtones, so for example, a user may be able to use ToneThis successfully in NY but not in CA through the same carrier and with the same handset. Please make sure you test your phone with the ToneThis trials to make sure it works.

The ringtone or wallpaper quality sucks?

Unfortunately, there isn't much ToneThis can do about the ringtone or wallpaper quality. ToneThis will provude the best ringtone and wallpaper quality possible for your specific device. As newer phones are released, we expect to support improved audio and image formats resulting in improved quality.

When I recieve the picture message on Verizon, I don't hear anything?

Please make sure your phone isn't on mute, if it is, then ringtones as part of a picture message will not be heard. Please also make sure your ringtones are not larger than 5-10 seconds. Because of the nature of Verizon, ToneThis is unable to support ringtones larger than this for Verizon.

When I hit upload, I get "Interconnect Failed (12002 or 12009 etc)"?

This error is due to the Windows XP firewall. You can turn off the firewall by going to the Control Panel->Windows Firewall.

Will I receive charges on my air bill (carrier bill)?

Depending on what carrier you have, you may or may not recieve additional charges on your air bill. In order to deliver the ringtone or wallpaper, ToneThis sends a text message to your phone. On some carriers text messaging is free, on other carriers, it's 1-2 cents each time you recieve one. For Verizon users, we send an MMS (picture message), the cost for these are usually higher.

When will you support my phone?

ToneThis refreshes it's phone list approximately once every 1-2 months. There are certain phones we cannot support. For example, we cannot support most Verizon Samsung phones. We also cannot support Verizon non-camera phones since we use Picture Messaging for delivery. Please post to the forum with your phone requests and we'll work to get them into our next device refresh, if technically possible.

Cingular baught ATT so which one do I select?

Please make sure to select the carrier you originally purchased your mobile number and phone with. If you select Cingular but you were originally an ATT subscriber before the merger, then you likely will not recieve your text messages to download the ringtones and / or wallpapers.

When will you support regional carriers such as Suncom, Centennial, Boost?

ToneThis is working actively to add support for many of the regional (and international) carriers. Note, if you do not see your regional carrier in our carrier listbox during registration, your carrier is not supported. This means selecting ATT because Suncom is affiliated with ATT will not work.

For additional support, please post in the forum.
